March Against Vanity

Above is my latest track fresh out of the oven. The truth is that the idea is not as fresh. It started when I first installed Waveform from Tracktion, a free DAW in order to record my ideas from time to time as my previous one, Cubase 5, nice as it was it sure was as outdated and couldn't handle new plugins. Over one of the demo songs on Waveform 13 I recorded the riff you can hear after the intro, just to try the whole thing. I then said "hmm, not too bad" so I kept it to finish it sometime later.

I am a "first take" person when it comes to recording stuff but I was struggling to shape it for months (with loooong breaks in between). The problem is that the more I have to try to finish some music the more I start to believe that the music is the problem hence it's not finished as easy and naturally as it should. And that extends the struggle. In similar cases I just throw it aside but I was feeling pity to not finish this specific one.

It would be funny (or maybe not so funny) to see how my ideas of evolving this thing have changed over this whole time. The more I delayed the more the war in Ukraine had its impact on this. Not that it was a tralala tune in the first place but definitely tended to be less sad and more stomach friendly. Also with less channels. It's really stained from all that's going on there but... if only this was our sole problem from this war, the stain on our songs...

I programmed the drums you hear in the middle part after the breakdown and played that fill with the triplets before the song returns to the main theme. The rest drums are from Waveform and also the "hey"'s plus a couple of short fx sounds. All the rest (electric/acoustic guitars and bass) were played recorded and mixed by me (so you know who to blame).

I must mention the rest free software I used (except Waveform 13):
ValhallaDSP (Supermassive & Space Modulator plugins)
Mercuriall (Metal Area plugin)
MIA (Fat & Muscle plugins)
Steven Slate (Drums plugin)
Bandlab (Mastering)
All good stuff, including Waveform (at least considering they're free) but man, the Valhalla stuff is priceless!

So that's it, far from perfect like us humans are. Have a great year everyone!
