I think so, in both ways. Meaning, they do reflect what we feel but they also define what we feel as each pair focuses on different things and even when focusing the same, the interpretation can vary a lot. For example, even between brothers, they can both visit an animal shelter but while one sees homeless dogs and kitties the other sees an ass farm:
That's the funny (?) side of things with Alan and Charlie Harper at one of the best sitcoms ever known to mankind. Let's look at a not as funny one:
Not funny at all actually. Staring at a one eyed cat doesn't take a stretch of imagination to think about the "how come". However, I get a feeling that it does take a stretch of imagination for (probably) most people to consider that we also used to be animals like this cat (and still are at some extent) and we also used to be not that nice to each other (and kinda still are).
It's simply because we tend to ignore the value of things we take for granted. Yes, there's still a lot of crime but imagine how many of us would have been one eyed if criminals had zero fear of law and the rest of the democratic institutions we have evolved over the years in order to protect ourselves from... ourselves🙂
Since that's the case, an extraterrestrial with common sense would expect the weaker parts of the human societies to beg for more law and order and demand stronger institutions and more democracy as these are their only shelter in our "jungle". Isn't it weird that it's kinda vice versa? The ones demonstrating against our institutions and cursing them on social media are mostly the lower classes.
Why?
It's a summary of reasons, the main one being the inability to understand the route of the problems one might be facing. For example, there's people convinced that Democracy is the reason they are poor. Or that since they're poor it means there's no Democracy. Both opinions question Democracy at its route being as stupid even though they might look opposite. Because even in the second case, if you already have Democracy and claim you don't just because your wallet is not as full as you wanted you have already undermined the Democratic state you live in.
To be honest I even question how "convinced" these guys are about their opinions. A strong motivation comes from the fact that they think they have not much (if any) to lose and they consider as worst case scenario a situation were at least we will all be poor so they won't feel that bad any more by comparison. It's a toxic and ignorant way of thinking which is adapted easier when there's no real experience of a true undemocratic regime.
So how we managed to neglect in the progress of time values appreciated thousands of years ago? Well, who told you that mankind evolves (?) in a linear way? Ancient Greeks had answers for most (I tent to believe all) malfunctions of humans. It takes just a look to the wealth of their heritage to find answers even today and still we don't, despite the unthinkably effortless access we have to information.
Watch the following short video:
The Iron Lady praising Latin and Greek studies, obviously rightly so, is among the most badly criticised and hated leaders ever. She was able to appreciate those values with much less tools in her hands than the ones we have today. Says a lot about how our mind and personality defines our life despite the situations that surrounds us.
So that's it? People are just plain stupid and that's where all our problems come from? Well, there's a good amount of truth in it but I don't rush to adapt snobbish and lazy approaches like this. The truth is that the agents of the East, mainly russians, have invested a lot in amplifying how spoiled people can be when they live in peace and wealth for quite a while. Over the last decades they have corroded the education system (and other institutions) with the help of left and far right parties so much to the point that for example here in Greece, refering to Ancient Greece was easily considered as a sign of being far right. Can you believe that we even decided at some point to reduce teaching Ancient Greek in Greek schools? A decision that was applauded by schoolkids since it made their life easier.
Here comes a wise phrase from a left author though:
"Whatever takes strain off of you, also takes your freedom"
