V-Strom 650 license plate relocation

Even after all these years living with my bike (since 2007 that is) and a whole lot of km done (140.000 and counting) on 3 continents, it's still hard to find something to complain about it but one detail that I hated since day one is this license light assembly that looks like cringy 80s, number 12 in the above diagram.

Lately I found out that the bulb was dead (first and only on the whole bike ever!) so I took it apart to change it. Well, embarrassing as it sounds, regardless how tender I was with it I managed to break the lens (number 13 in the above diagram). Instead of looking for a new one I took it as a good chance to get rid of the whole thing for good and get even for the partial loss of my pride. I didn't take pictures through the process as I had something else in mind at first so fast forward, here's the end result:

First of all, laugh all you want about the state of my plate and rightly so as it is a victim of a clumsy guy at a gas station. He slammed it with the pump's hose and broke it hence I had to put a metal panel behind it to support it with those extra screws (new license on my to do list). And this is one more reason I relocated it since the original place leaves it low and and exposed, unless your ministry issues smaller ones than ours do. Afterwards I thought about cutting short this far from sexy fender but as you can see a first aid kit found its place there conveniently making this ugly black thing more red and visible, partially counterweighting the absence of license light. I wouldn't recommend putting anything heavier than this feather light kit down there so keep your toolbox where they are. FYI (in case you wonder) the plate is mounted using the light assembly's holes and I chose to keep the rubber gasket/spacer for less vibes.

I'm happy with the whole thing. However, it triggered some food for thought. I am thinking about a future relocation by removing the exhaust's cap, drilling a whole on the license to fit the exhaust's inner diameter (with or without the pee shooter - not sure yet) and mount it using the 3 bolts of the cap. That would save even more space on the fender and still keep the license not overexposed (though obviously much hotter 😄 ).

What do you think?
