The HIVE Tour - Episode 39 - Walking the least attractive German village (so far)

My first morning here in Medard has just begun and that's what I see as soon as I open my eyes, in other words bedroom view:

The day is nice so after a quick breakfast I dress myself to see what is what around here. As soon as I step out of my door I get a feeling that this must be the least charming place I've been so far in Germany:

It's the first time in this country that by looking at a house I wonder whether it is lived or not:

One of the windows of this next one as you can see is sealed with bricks - WTF?

A few steps later I find this column:

There's not sign about it neither anyone has bothered to share any info online. Next to it is the most charming thing I've seen around here so far:

My aim is to see how the riverside looks like here so I cross that bridge:

Instinctively I start to look out for a passing train even though it's all too quiet but soon I realise there's no train passing here since who knows when:

The abandoned kiosk is now a mini URBEX point:

I say goodbye to the village behind me,

and walk towards river Glan to see how things look like here:

The morning sun kills the pictures but that's the price to pay if you are like me and prefer to picture empty places. Not that there's that much of crowd around here anyway. The serene audio and visual of the water pays back though:

The guys hanging out under the bridge are also nice to watch:

German speakers can help the rest of us with that sign on the rock reading something about this bridge:

Now that I'm on top I get a better view of that feathered gang:

And the troubled side of the river's water:

Makes an interesting contrast with the calm one:

Does that mean "pig's square" or my German are just non existent? (the latter is a fact)

All I know is that "Schwanenplatz" offers you free access to this bench 'n table combo,

and that combo offers you view to the bridge and river:

Fun bits are not over yet so this path (which I guess turn to a canal when it rains) leads you to a dog house:

And that doghouse(?) has a chimney (!?!?)

The least attractive village of Medard starts flirting with the title of the most weird as well.

I've already spend enough time at the bridge of Glan river here in Medard so I take a last shot of it with the happy wind generators going round in the background before I move on:

Moving on means walking up the mountain so here's my route:

There's a canal that intrigues me to walk it that comes under the road and then goes down through the forest:

But I'd better see other things first and decide if I'll do it on my way back.

This switchback would be perfect for racing - if they haven't organises a local race they should:

In the middle of nowhere I find out of the blue a pair of toilets:

It takes only a couple of steps to find out that they are not for hikers but are somehow part of this venue:

The venue is a grill hut (!) or at least that's what I understand by Grillhütte. A weird thing especially in the total absence of human presence and these two cut trees at its entrance don't make it less weird:

As I step in I find this sort of monument:

I guess it refers to WWI judging by the years mentioned but I have no other clue - German speakers feel free to apply your input:

I told you it is supposed to be a grill hut right? Well, what else can it be with a thing like this?

So the village gathers around the fire in this grill pavilion watching the meat getting done? As it seems yes. I step out of this thing to have a look from the outside. Wind generators are still happy:

And here's the grill pavilion from above:

I walk a bit higher in search of nice views:

I have repeatedly said how I like it when trees frame my pictures:

But look what happens when they get old and sick:

This way doesn't seem to lead to anything special so I walk to the opposite side. After a few minutes I see this construction made of stones:

As I get closer it becomes clear that this was a loading spot. No idea what those wagons were carrying back in the day though:

Was this some sort of silo?

Germans speakers can help us on that once again:

Not much to see behind that door:

I walk further and later I see a yard which I can't tell if it belongs to a camping that's closed or to a funny guy - all weird stuff happens in this village 🙂:

I step back in the village and this time that column I saw on my way out looks even more weird now with that junk in the background:
That look more like Morocco than Germany actually

If you look closely you'll see that there's a bird nest on every single cavity of this roof:

Odd mix of old houses with this new in this odd village:

The poorest part of Germany that I've seen so far must be here:

I'm at the North end of this village and I see a nice building in the background behind this tree:

Vegetation is a little wild here:

Same building from a different angle:

This path leads to even wilder and unwalkable vegetation:

These stairs though lead to the local monument:

Which seems to haven't been walked for quite a while:

It has monuments for both world wars:

Plus this religious one:

View to the village with the monument in my back:

As I walk back I see this horse during its lunch:

It kept staring at me like this for like a minute and then decided that its lunch is more interesting. I also kept staring for a while at this funny sign at a local store later:

And I'm finally back to my place. Time to eat so the chef (me) provides the following composition:

Bon Appetit!

You can watch a video from my walk in 4K here:

Hope you liked it, see you on the next one!
